Eve turned around and saw that Teig followed them. She leaned back against the warm leather seat. Seeing the two grown men sparring off, made her think about her friends at the station. Men seemed to need a release of some sorts when tension ran high. Today was just one of those days. She needed the weight room herself right about now. Sitting in the back of the limo right after being near Teig, her hormones were all over the place.

Closing her eyes, Eve couldn’t believe how tired she was. Thinking about Teig and how protective he was of her and Jem helped relieve the tension and fear that had built up today. A sharp pain raced across her jaw into her cheekbone. She reached up and rubbed the area. Hating the pain and strange symptoms, Eve tried to erase the thoughts running through her mind. What the hell is wrong with me?

“What’s wrong? Eve?”

When she opened her eyes, Jem was staring at her from her position next to her. “Nothing, I guess I’m just tired. It’s been a long few days, hasn’t it.”

Jem nodded, her eyebrow lifted, suddenly she asked, “Do you like Teig?”

“Aww, Jem, you wouldn’t understand if I told you.” Eve reached over and grabbed the young girl’s hand. Holding on it somehow felt natural and right to her.

“Eve, can I ask you a question please?” The plea in Jem’s voice and eyes tore away at her heart.

“Go ahead ask away.” Eve squeezed her hand.

“Okay, so there are times I’m just so confused. One minute, I feel sad, then another angry. When I was just a normal teenager I was really nerdy, clumsy, maybe just an average plain girl. Then, one day, I started to sing and my voice came out perfect, unusual and beautiful, almost haunting. A teacher heard me and the rest is history. I’ve changed so much, so quickly, and I think there’s something wrong with me.”

Eve wiped the tears slowly running down Jem’s face. She remembered her young teen years and decided to share. “Jem, listen to me. I can relate, because I, too, was just as confused as you were. I wasn’t like the others in school. I played harder with every sport, football, hockey, volleyball, tennis, you name it I participated in. Many of the girls were jealous of me. I didn’t care, I just played, ran and worked harder. I let my anger rule me through my high school, college, and military days.

It was Jem’s turn to offer her comfort. She held onto Eve’s hand harder, rubbing her palm in a gentle circular pattern. The strangeness of it went out the window. It was important for these two lost souls to find each other.

“That describes me,” Jem’s voice rose in surprise.

“Tell me more?” Eve asked, she enjoyed talking to the team. They were somehow connected and Eve wanted to hear more about her.

Nothing made sense to her, Eve decided to wait until she was alone to really think about all it.
